Local Attraction:

Historic Old Mesilla
We are 1 block of the historic plaza. Mesilla was an influential part of the development of the west before and after the Civil War. The largest town between Galveston and San Francisco in the 1850's is now a sleepy little town with a rich history.

Most famous for being the site where the Gadsden Purchase a.k.a. the Treaty of Mesilla was signed. The Treaty of Mesilla was crucial to the United States in building a transcontinental railroad and also to reconcile outstanding border issues between Mexico and the United States following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that made the second largest land purchase of the United Staes. This added the western portion of New Mexico and Colorado, the southwestern portion of Wyoming, all of Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California to the Union.

Also known as the site where Billy the Kid was tried and sentenced for crimes in the Lincoln County war. He escaped and was was killed at Fort Stanton, NM where his sentence was to be carried out.
Pat Garrett also served as Sheriff of Dona Ana County and is buried at he Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces.
